Chapter 5 lovers' odyssey
Seven times I blinked my eyes and still she smiled for me,
Ophelia of the blossom days; her joy was mine to see.
Entranced, enchanted, by her gaze I tumbled into bliss,
Nevermore to fantasise upon a lover's kiss,
To worship at her dancing feet was all I longed to do-
Readjusting values, singing notes I never knew.
About my dusty shopworn soul I sensed an aura glow,
Never did intent emotion sweep and bubble so!
Circling my certainty there came the tinge of doubt-
Egad you fool, you're gawping like a yokel or a lout!
Dust your courtly manners off, and say what you're about.
As seven times I blinked my eyes and still she smiled for me,
New lover of my blossom days; her joy was mine to see.
Overcome with bashfulness I clipped my gaping jaw,
Dared to offer hands to her (and longed to offer more),
Yesterday this heart was mine; now it ached desire
Sylvan lady of the path, my rose that crowned the briar.
She found entreaty in my eyes and answered with her own,
Eloquent; she promised love in terms for me alone-
Yes, though her words bewildered me I reaped them from her tone.
Oh, seven times I blinked my eyes and still she smiled for me
First lady of the blossom days; my joy was hers to see.
Love begotten by a meeting with a graceful fay,
Overwhelmed my need to wander on the slanted way,
Verily I yearned for overwriting of my fate,
Entranced, enchanted ecstasy my values to restate-
Regarding us as wedded now, my beckoned future shone-
She kissed me for a heartbeat. A flash- and she was gone.
